Around 1980. Photographer Bob Carlos Clarke has a reputation as Britain’s answer to Helmut Newton. His images are superficially erotic and fetishistic but have dark, gothic, deeply unsettling undercurrents. Years before Photoshop, he was fascinated by the possibilities of manipulation – not so much to perfect as to unsettle and disconcert – and to achieve that he created weird, hand-tinted photographic collages such as Das Schwimmbad.
