Penelope Tree modelling a Cardin collar

Penelope Tree modelling a Cardin collar by Richard Avedon

1967. This is the year that American-born model, Penelope Tree, moves to London to live with David Bailey. She’s 18 years old and it’s no surprise that her striking and unconventional looks catch Avedon’s attention. This image is part of a shoot published in the March 15 1968 issue of Vogue US:

Cardin’s chromium collar
This is the beauty of sculpture, for space age angels, for shining on a satin skin. The collar: gleaming, curving, catching a column of night black crepe, perfectly simple. Sculptured by G. Mannoni for Cardin; wool crepe by Burg; hair by Ara Gallant.
