1943. According to IMDb, Joan Crawford was offered the lead role in The Heavenly Body but turned it down saying, “It was about a girl who stands around and does nothing. I told the studio to give the part to Hedy Lamarr.” Ouch! A caption on the back of the photo reads:
LADY OF THE PEARLS…Raven-haired Hedy Lamarr selects pearls as her favorite costume jewelry and wears them in this new portrait study. Hedy’s most recent Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer picture in which she is co-starred with William Powell, is “The Heavenly Body,” a gay comedy concerning astronomy and astrology. Strictly speaking, the title “The Heavenly Body” refers to a comet, but if you’d rather imagine that it’s Hedy, that’s your privilege! Alexander Hall directed the comedy and Arthur Hornblow Jr. was the producer.
The gown here is probably by Irene, who is the costume supervisor for The Heavenly Body. The set designer, by the way, is none other than Cedric Gibbons, husband of Hazel Brooks.
